STEP 01

Fill the jar

Add soil to about a third of a clear, straight-sided jar — pick out any rocks or roots. Fill the rest with water, more water than soil, and add one optional drop of dish soap to help the grains separate cleanly.

Fill the jar Add water
STEP 02

Shake, then wait

Seal the lid and shake hard until every particle is suspended. Then set it down for a full 24 hours. Sand settles fast, silt takes an hour, and clay drifts down overnight — leaving clean, distinct bands.

Shake it up Let it settle
STEP 03

Snap a photo

Open the app and photograph the jar from the side, at eye level, in good light. The level bars align to each settled band automatically.

STEP 04

Slide the bars

Drag each level bar to the line between two layers. The app calculates your soil type instantly — no math, no measuring, no fuss. Try it right on this page.

Meet your soil type

Three layer heights become three percentages, and those three numbers land on one spot in the USDA texture triangle — a named soil type that tells you how it drains, holds nutrients, and responds to water. Drag across the triangle below to explore all twelve types.
